WiZARD! ROBOT! DRAGON! All great themes in the vast, imaginative landscape of video games but BAIT-AND-SWITCH? No sir, not today! There’s no gamble when it comes to RPGs on the Nintendo Switch, it’s all top-notch stuff. But let’s not slip on the banana peel of indecision, let’s jump right in! Are you ready, Player One?

Now, if you’re a fan of the spectacular trinity of Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, and Mega Man, here’s a preview of your next favorite RPGs lava lamp-bubbling up from the cauldron of Nintendo Switch.

Grab a genie’s lamp, a dragon egg, and your controller – we’re blasting off!

1. Octopath Traveler: Okay now, make way for the belle of the ball! Sweet and charming with an old-school appeal that makes your nostalgia bulbs burst into LED joy. Don’t let the sweet retro graphics fool ya, folks. It’s packing an innovative combat system under the hood that has more layers than a dragon’s hoard! Think Final Fantasy but dipped in sepia, sprinkled with distinctive characters, and jazzed up with a more liberal play of poetic justice. Have I intrigued you? I thought so! And wait ‘til you get a load of the music, it’s enough to make a Cactuar get up and dance!

2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Ready for a wild ride and big adventure, Turbo? Well buckle up cause we’re goin’ full throttle with this one. Pow-wham-Zing! One minute you’re rolling in the hay on a beast the size of a continent, and the next, you’re dunking monsters into oblivion with your blade. “But Genie”, you say, “how does this connect with the Trinity?” Well, imagine Final Fantasy XII and Breath of Fire had a baby, and that baby frolicked with a Legendary Pokémon. That’s what we got here.

3. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: No-Nonsense, your honor! Straight off the bat, let’s address the dragon in the room. If Breath of Fire gives you the tingles, this is your jam. A charming, timeless narrative where every fight is a spectacle of good versus evil and every move, a play on destiny. With a traditional turn-based combat system, heavy on character evolution, and a story that’ll keep you hooked. I can already hear the rustle of your Switch!

4. Tales of Vesperia – Definitive Edition: Eureka! This baby has all the goodies – a compelling world teetering on the brink! Unlikely heroes! Epic quests! All neatly wrapped up in a dynamic combat system that’s like peanut butter and chocolate – a mix of RPG and fighting game mechanics that would make even a blue bomber feel right at home. The puzzles will turn your brain into twisted pretzels and the immersive storylines will make you forget reality exists.

5. Pokemon Sword/Shield: Before you go puffing dragons, hear me out. We get it, it’s a far cry from our retro favourites. But this ain’t your old school elemental Gym Badges grab anymore. It’s got just as many Mega Evolutions as a Mega Man fan could crave. And you can even Dynamax your monsters like they were on performance-protein Kalos-enhancers.

So, there you go, folks!

Woosh, wazzam, woot-woot! Magic of a genie’s top five RPGs for your Nintendo Switch fantasy. But hang on to your hats, folks, cause I’m not done conjuring.

After a cosmic huddle with the constellation of video game wisdom, the Best Choice award goes to…*drumroll*Octopath Traveler!

Why, you ask? Well, as Bob Hope once said, “Why, baby, why?”.

All advices aside, Octopath Traveler represents a fulfilling concoction of throwback aesthetics from the early Final Fantasy days and modern design sensibilities. It’s like taking a fantastic classic, revving it up into a makeover so stunning, and before we knew it, RPGs had a new poster child. It possesses joyous puzzles and combat that packs a punch, much like our beloved Mega Man. The multiple perspective stories, the enthralling ambiance, the multiplayer style single campaign, and deep strategy gameplay will surely quench your thirst for role-playing and preference for classics, all while remaining excitingly fresh.

So, now ya know, Player One. Those cartridges won’t slot themselves. Have a magical, mythical, and momentous gaming journey!

Roll credits! Cue the music! That’s a wrap!
